Help Our Veterans and Military Families This Memorial Day

Veteran Chris Patterson

Dear Friend of Fisher House So Cal,

I’d like you to meet Christopher Lee Patterson, a 37-year-old U.S. Army veteran whose courage and resilience inspires us all. Christopher’s journey from serving in Iraq to facing life-altering injuries is a testament to the sacrifices our military heroes make and the profound challenges they often endure.

In 2018, Christopher’s life took a devastating turn when a tragic accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, robbing him of the ability to move his arms and legs. As a quadriplegic, he requires a ventilator to breathe, and round-the-clock care, which he has received at the Spinal Cord Center at the VA Long Beach Medical Center since 2018.

Imagine facing each day with the knowledge that every movement, every breath, is a testament to your strength and determination. This is Christopher’s reality. Yet, through it all, he continues to dream, hope, and inspire.

Amid unimaginable hardship, Christopher’s spirit remains unbroken, fueled by unwavering optimism and the love of his devoted family. His loving family includes three aunts, two who live in Washington, and one in New Mexico, who helped raise him during a difficult childhood.

In a recent trip to the Fisher House Long Beach to visit her nephew at the VA-Long Beach Medical Center, Nancy Carriaga credits out-of-town visits from family to be near Chris’s bedside, especially in the early days of his life-changing diagnosis, with helping get him through some of his darkest days.

Fisher House has been a lifeline for Christopher and countless military families like his. It’s more than just a place to stay; it’s a sanctuary where families find comfort, support, and a sense of community during their darkest hours. It’s where Christopher’s family found solace and strength when they needed it most.

Your generosity has the power to transform lives.

This Memorial Day, I ask you to join us in honoring our military heroes by supporting Fisher House Southern California. Every dollar you donate, up to $25,000, will be matched by an anonymous donor until June 30th, doubling the impact of your contribution, and ensuring that families like Christopher’s receive the support they so desperately need.

Fisher House Southern California, Inc. supports four Fisher Houses located at: VA Long Beach Medical Center; Navy Hospital Camp Pendleton; and Naval Medical Center San Diego (which includes two houses).

And when a Fisher House in Southern California is not available, we provide temporary lodging for veterans and military families, free of charge, so families can focus on what’s important – on the full recovery of their loved ones.

In 2023, Fisher House So Cal provided a ‘home away from home’ for 813 families, at no cost to the family, offering over 7,800 nights of accommodation, saving them more than $1.5 million in expenses.

But these numbers only scratch the surface of the profound impact your support can make.

Please consider making a gift on-line today at FisherHouseSoCal.org — or send in your donation by mail by June 30 to: Fisher House So Cal at PO Box 110, Long Beach, CA 90801.

Together, let’s ensure that no military family ever feels alone during their time of need.

Thank you for your compassion, generosity, and for standing with our Fisher House families.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Braden J. Phillips
